Album Review: "Demagoguery" by Enmity

Enmity, a thrash/death metal band formed in 2019, is an explosive fusion of talent from France, Indonesia, Jordan and Greece... Their debut album, Demagoguery, released in 2022 on Austrian label Kvlt und Kaos Productions, is a true show of force. The 38-minute opus perfectly embodies the essence of technical thrash/death metal, skilfully blending raw old-school aggression with modern production.

From the very first seconds, Demagoguery captivates with its blend of brutality and melody. Sharp riffs mingle with the pounding drums of George Kollias, famous for his work with Nile, which impose a relentless rhythm throughout the album. The structure of the tracks skilfully oscillates between slow and fast passages, demonstrating the musicians' technical mastery. The album leaves no respite for the listener, each track being a concentrate of rage and technique. The solos are particularly remarkable, adding a melodic dimension to the soundscape. The Bullet that Kills You stands out for its percussive heavy solo, while the track, Demagoguery, features a darker, more introspective solo, reinforcing the albums's oppressive atmosphere.

The vocals, performed by Steve "Zuul" Petit, are a real slap in the face. Dominated by howling thrash vocals, the album also plunges into powerful growls, reminiscent of old-school death metal. On the final track, Demagoguery, Zuul reaches his peak with a ferocious vocal performance, alternating between gutturality and screams, delivering the lyrics with fearsome intensity.

Among the album's standout tracks are The Enemy Below, Flying Fortress and, of course, Demagoguery, each offering a different facet of Enmity's masterful violence. With Demagoguery, the band delivers an impressive debut album, which combines the technicality of thrash and the intensity of death metal, offering an intense, melodic sonic experience, the band demonstrates impressive mastery in both composition and execution.
