EP Review: "Eastern Witchcraft" by Gallower

Gallower is a Black Thrash Metal band from Poland, formed in 2015. After a few demos and a split release, The Extremity Of Dominion in 2019, the band dropped their debut album Behold the Realm of Darkness in 2020. But today, I’m diving into their 2022 EP Eastern Witchcraft, released under the German label Dying Victims Productions. This EP demands the attention of every Black/Thrash Metal enthusiast.

From the very first notes, you know exactly what you’re in for. Fast compositions with razor-sharp guitars and relentless drumming. The thrash vocals are harsh and tireless, adding to the raw energy of the EP. Over its 16-minute runtime, Gallower delivers pure, old-school thrash that fans of the genre will appreciate. The influences of bands like old Sodom and Kreator are clear in every riff and beat. The solos are cutting and never go unnoticed, showcasing the band’s technical abilities throughout the 5-track release.

Standout tracks include Claws and Fangs, which made me feel like I was listening to Sodom. The pace is fast, just like you’d expect from Black Thrash. Enchanted Woods also stands out, with an intro that quickly erupts into a sonic avalanche that doesn’t let up. The vocals on this track are particularly dynamic, adding a unique touch to the song.

Overall, Eastern Witchcraft is a solid release that stays true to the Black Thrash Metal genre. While it doesn’t stray far from the genre’s well-established formulas, it captures the raw energy and aggression that fans of this style expect. It’s a short but intense listen that showcases Gallower’s understanding of their craft without reinventing the wheel.
