Djevel, formed in 2009, even if it needs no introduction , is a Norwegian band that follows in the footsteps and spirit of 90s black metal. while creating their own sound. Composed of musicians with a wealth of experience in the black metal scene, Djevel have captured the dark, violent essence of the genre. Their discography, which includes standout albums such as Dødssanger (2011), Saa raa og Kald (2015), and Blant svarte graner (2018). The band has never ceased to captivate black metal worshippers. In 2022, Naa skrider natten sort consolidated their discography which I consider to be a crucial black metal album.
Their latest offering, Natt til Ende, unleashed this November via Aftermath Music, marks the final chapter of Natt (Night) triology begun with Tanker som rir natten (2021). This 45-minute album is a dark soundscape that immerses the listener in an atmosphere that is both malevolent and haunting. With cutting guitars, impeccable drums and the keyboards in the background, Djevel creates a sound where every note feels like a descent into the abyss. Throughout the album, the vocals are sharp, screaming and devilish, with moments of ritual chanting, evoking a deep sense of rejection and hatred within me.
Natt til ende captivates with its masterful songwriting and nuanced structure. The album starts with Bespottelsen, which immediately immerses the listener in Djevel's mystical realm. Sharp guitars and energetic drums create an intense sound, while keyboards intensify the atmosphere. Tracks as I skovaandsfavn offer captivating instrumental moments that keep the oppressive and enigmatic essence of the album.Among my favourite tracks on this offering, I particularly liked En vinter efter kommer that starts with a loud oppressive atmosphere. and as the seconds pass, this atmosphere changes into a ritualistic sound. Under nattens fane i fandens prakt features remarkably fine drumming to accompany epic melodies. Finally, the 14-minute eponymous track Natt til ende closes the album on a cold, powerful note, evoking feelings of anger and rejection towards the dogmas and gods.
Natt til Ende proves to be a masterpiece of nowdays black metal, offering a richness of sound that deserves to be explored in depth. Djevel's ability to maintain a dark atmosphere while offering nuanced songwriting and masterfuly structure makes this album an essential for worshippers of the genre. In my opinion, this could well be the black metal album of the year.
