Harlinger is an ambitious project founded this year by JB, a multi-instrumentalist hailing from East Frisia, Germany. From the outset, this one-man melodic black metal band has been delivering rich, nuanced music on its debut album Kinderschreck. Available digitally via Black Flame Alliance and in physical format (CD) on the Black Metal Musicians Productions label, An album with seven tracks totalling 38 minutes and 55 seconds. Not content with simply mastering the instruments, JB also gives his project a distinct identity, blending varied influences with elaborate songwriting.
The first thing that struck me was the album's artwork, a real masterpiece by Azoth Illustration. The cover perfectly captures the eerie atmosphere that pervades Kinderschreck. I particularly liked the attention to detail, which immerses the listener in Harlinger's realm even before the first note. On doing some research, I discovered that Azoth Illustration had also worked on the Dark Chameleon Dimers EP by Winds of Winter (black/death metal band from Germany), and it's clear that its visual style reinforces the overall impact of the albums they illustrate.
Without wasting any time, I'm going to tell you about Kinderschreck...
Musically, Kinderschreck offer an impressive palette of sounds, mixing frenetic blast beats, melodic riffs and heavy metal-influenced passages. The cinematic intro sets an ominous mood before Der Nachtkrapp propels us into a maelstrom of fast rhythms and intense melodies. Der Hakemann, with its heavy metal passages, reminded me at times of Iron Maiden, while Die Roggenmuhme I alternates between frenetic moments and calmer passages. I was also captivated by Der Butzemann, where folk compositions, particularly from 3:55 onwards, are subtly interwoven with haunting melodies and masterful percussion. JB has structured his songwritting in a nuanced way, making each track captivating from beginning to end.
Finally, my favourite track Der Kindleinfresser. This track is a true demonstration of creativity. Right from the start, the frantic rhythm and elaborate melodies captivate. A hypnotically repeated melody dominates until 2:45, at which point the vocals take on a striking growl tinge. At 4:20, the vocal intensity goes up another notch with a transition to a more furious vocal, perfectly in the spirit of black metal. Each vocal change is announced by a certain melody with pinpoint timing, considerably enrich the atmosphere of the track.
Now the only thing I can add is that for a debut album, Kinderschreck is an excellent one. Mixing different styles to create an identity is really very artistic. If you like melodic black metal and heavy metal this album will definitely please you. I leave you the link below.
