Mesein, a black metal project formed in 2024, arrives on the extreme scene with a bang thanks to their debut EP, Spiritless Dungeon. Available on streaming, on CD via Trench Warfare Production, and on cassette via Blackflame Records, this work reveals a universe that is both dark and violent, marked by raw, uncompromising production.
Pits of Hell opens the EP with a gloomy ambience that quickly evolves into a brutal frenzy. Sharp guitar riffs and relentless drums create a chaotic backdrop, while the morbid vocals evoke the rage of a ferocious beast. This track lays the foundations for a musical journey in which violence is omnipresent.
Following on from Grim Requiem, Mesein maintain this intensity. From the very first notes, the combination of aggressive guitars and powerful percussion plunges the listener into an violent soundscape. The raw production accentuates this dark atmosphere, and the bestial screaming reinforces the impression of despair.
The Gate introduces a new dimension with its cold, mysterious ambience. The intro is reminiscent of Pits of Hell, but is followed by a rhythmic bombardment that intensifies the sound. Here, the vocals take a slightly back seat, allowing the drums to dominate, while keeping the listener in a palpable state of tension.
The EP concludes with Lamentation of the Souls, which offers an interesting contrast through its calm keyboard. Although this track retains the dark atmosphere that characterises the whole EP, it does provide a certain chill, leaving the listener in a contemplative state after the previous deluge of sound.
