INTERVIEW - “Dungeon Synth Is the Food of My Soul" Discussion With the Man Behind Tarangogu

Emerging from the depths of Bulgarian folklore and the mystical realms of Dungeon Synth, Tarangogu has crafted an enchanting and immersive sonic universe. With inspirations ranging from Burzum to ancient folk music, as well as a deep fascination for history and fantasy, this project weaves intricate musical tales of dark wizards, witches, and legendary battles. As Tarangogu prepares to release their first full-length album on March 20, we dive into the origins of the project, the lore behind their compositions, and what to expect from this highly anticipated release.

Serial Metalbums: Tarangogu is a Dungeon Synth project with an immersive and atmospheric sound. Could you introduce the project to our readers? What inspired you to create it, and how did the concept come to life?

Tarangogu: I always wanted to create music. Dungeon Synth has captured my heart the first time i heard it. I knew that i wanted to do something like that. So i started listening to a lot of DS. I analyzed the song structures. It is the food of my soul. The concept came to life when i decided to finally get myself a midi keyboard.

Serial Metalbums: The name Tarangogu has a very unique and mystical feel to it. Is there a specific meaning or story behind the name? How does it reflect the essence of your music?

Tarangogu: This is a great question. Tarangogu means "boogeyman" in our region in Bulgaria. It is name of the entity that has been used to scare children for possibly centuries. It most definitely has an impact on my music too. I believe that it adds some sort of mystique to the whole project.

Serial Metalbums: Dungeon Synth is a genre deeply rooted in fantasy, ambient, and medieval aesthetics. What are some of the key musical influences that have shaped the sound of Tarangogu? Do you draw inspiration from any specific artists, albums, or even classical compositions?

Tarangogu: Of course! My main musical inspiration is Burzum, no doubt about that. However i have listened to a lot of folk music from various cultures too so it helps.

Serial Metalbums: Beyond music, Dungeon Synth often finds inspiration in literature, folklore, history, and even role-playing games. Are there any books, legends, or other forms of media that have played a significant role in shaping your artistic vision?

Tarangogu: As i have said, even the name Tarangogu itself is a folklore character itself. Besides LoTR also influenced me to a degree. However my undying love for history and swords is probably what got me to this point.

Serial Metalbums: Your debut album, The Dark Wizard Guild, introduced listeners to the soundscape of Tarangogu. Can you tell us about the themes and concept behind the album? What kind of story or atmosphere were you trying to create?

Tarangogu: So, TDWG (The Dark Wizard Guild) aimed to create a small story. The first attempts at a worldbuilding for my universe. The basically goes like this:

The elder wizards are being summoned to the dark wizard guild. They then arrival to the enchanted lands where the castle of the guild is located at. Then to begin inquisition ceremony they start smoking the "magical herbs" *wink wink* and after that they come to a decision and banish you to the eternal dungeons.

Serial Metalbums: Your second album, Black Ritual of The Witches, seems to explore darker and more occult themes. Could you elaborate on the concept behind this release and how it differs from The Dark Wizard Guild in terms of atmosphere and storytelling?

Tarangogu: BRoTW (Black Ritual of The Witches) was actually born out of nowhere. It was not planned but after Blackflame Records contacted me and told me about his wish to release a keller synth album from me i decided to make one. There is also a story told with the song names.

The witches conjure ancient spirits and then they find a powerful one that is willing to help them in their goal of finding a way to destroy the dark wizard guild. Then they perform a black ritual and with the help of the tormented soul they summon a dragon. And with the dragon they assault the guild and completely destroy their castle.

Serial Metalbums: You are currently working on a new album. Can you share some details about its themes and the creative direction you’re taking? Will it be a continuation of your previous works, or are you exploring new sonic territories?

Tarangogu: Of course, my new album is to be released at the 20th of march. It will be my first full length album. It will continue this story with the song names. This album will be more melodic and sometimes even epic with a few songs like "Tale of Lucas The Swordmaster".

Serial Metalbums: How is the recording process going for this upcoming release? Have you encountered any challenges or breakthroughs that have shaped the way this album is taking form?

Tarangogu: The recording is all done. The album is ready and even the casettes are printed. I will be releasing the casettes with Blackflame Records and Sweet 8-Bitterness.

Serial Metalbums: Lastly, for those who have just discovered Tarangogu, what would be the best way to experience your music? Is there a particular album, track, or setting that you feel best captures the spirit of your work?

Tarangogu: The best introduction to my music will probably be through my new album. Especially with the song "Rest Now, For There Will Be More Battles" or "A Cursed Forest, The Winds Whisper Our Names". However one of my first songs, "Meditation At Revenshellegdom" has a special place in my heart. I recommend checking it out too. It captures the mystique and atmosphere of the project.
