EP Review: “Scourge” by Uninhibited

Label: Independent
Genre: Death Metal
Length: 25:40
---------------------

After a good debut album entitled Reign of the Unholy released last year, German death metal duo Uninhibited are back with a hard-hitting new EP entitled Scourge, available on all streaming platforms. This is their second EP, the first Ascend the Plank having been released in 2023. This new chapter features five tracks totalling 25 minutes and 40 seconds.

Scourge is fully in the death metal tradition: the compositions are straightforward, yet varied enough thanks to the changes of rhythm. You can hear the influence of bands like Death, Cannibal Corpse, and at times Morbid Angel. The duo's approach is classic, frontal death metal, as evidenced by the track In Darkness Deep. The compositions are marked by fast acceleration and precise drumming. As for the vocals, they impress with their raw energy: a powerful, dynamic performance that almost never falters, even if the nuances remain discreet. On the other hand, the production is effective, while retaining a feeling of rawness and organics.

Among the most striking moments on this EP are the blast beats and the change of rhythm at 1:33 on the opening track Blood Sucker - the arrival of the vocals at this point clearly evokes to me the influence of Cannibal Corpse. At 5:35, the atmosphere slows down and darkens, creating a gloomy, oppressive atmosphere, before moving on at 6:37 to an excellent, dark and intense guitar solo (my favourite on the whole EP).

On the track Excavation, the imprint of the Death is more apparent. There's a memorable solo at 3:12, which perfectly complements the track's aggression. The drums on Primal Whisper made a particularly strong impression on me from 0:22 onwards, with very fast, almost frenetic drumming, punctuated by numerous changes of rhythm reminiscent of the heyday of old school death metal. Coffin on the Sea offers a heavier, darker atmosphere, thanks in particular to the notable variations at 2:38 and 3:35. On this track, the vocal performance reaches a peak, both intense and controlled.

My favourite tracks are without a shadow of a doubt Blood Sucker (I've added this track to my playlist: Death Metal - Serial List 2025), Excavation and Coffin on the SeaA short but intense EP that confirms Uninhibited's talent and consistency in a style they've mastered perfectly.
