I discovered German black metal band Sumerian Tombs with their brand new album Age of Eternal Night, released a few days. Hailing from Cologne, the band remains mysterious but impresses from the first few minutes of listening. After a little research (thanks to Metal Archives) I found out that they had already released a self-titled debut album in 2022. That one went straight into my playlist. But today it's Age Of Eternal Night that has captivated me. It's a dark, intense album that I would recommend without hesitation to all worshippers of occult black metal.
On vinyl, Age of Eternal Night features 8 tracks, while the digital and CD versions offer 4 bonus tracks, for a total running time of 1 hour 06 minutes. From the very first track, we're plunged into an obscure, malevolent atmosphere. Sumerian Tombs explores black metal with powerful songwriting, alternating between fast, aggressive passages and slower sections that retain the same intensity. Sharp guitars, pounding drums and cavernous vocals create a heavy, suffocating atmosphere. It's a sonic experience marked by an evil, almost ritualistic aura which can be too much for sensitive listeners.
Among my favourite tracks on the album, I would particularly recommend Naamah - Temptress Of The Night, Cuutha - Necropolis and The Seal - Blood Meditation. These tracks perfectly illustrate the richness and darkness of the Sumerian Tombs universe. For me, Age of Eternal Night has already established itself as one of my best black metal albums of 2025 - and perhaps even one of the most powerful extreme metal albums I have heard the recent months. If you're a fanatic of deep, occult black metal with an malevolent atmosphere, this album is a must-listen.
