From Ashes Reborn is a melodic death metal band from Wittlich, Germany, formed in 2017 with the desire to turn the end of a previous project into a new beginning. Blending aggression, melody, and atmosphere, the band built its identity with their debut album Existence Exiled in 2018 and returned in 2026 with their second full-length album Chasing Utopia. In this interview, they discuss their origins, influences, new album, and future plans.
Asmoth: Can you introduce From Ashes Reborn to our readers and tell us how the band was formed back in 2017?
From Ashes Reborn: From Ashes Reborn is a melodic death metal band from Wittlich, Germany, built on the idea of merging crushing intensity with atmospheric depth. The band was formed in 2017 after our previous project came to an end—we didn’t want to stop creating music, so we took everything we had learned and started fresh. The name reflects exactly that: rising from the ashes, stronger and more focused, with a clear vision of the sound we wanted to create.
Asmoth: Your debut album Existence Exiled was released in 2018—looking back, how do you see its impact on your evolution as a band?
From Ashes Reborn: Existence Exiled was a defining milestone for us. It laid the foundation of our sound and proved that our approach—combining melody, aggression, and atmosphere—resonates with listeners. Looking back, it was the starting point of everything: it shaped our identity, but also showed us where we could evolve in terms of songwriting, production, and overall depth.
Asmoth: What are the main musical influences that have shaped your sound, both in the early days and today?
From Ashes Reborn: Our roots are deeply embedded in the Scandinavian melodic death metal scene of the ‘90s—bands like Dark Tranquillity, Dissection, and At The Gates had a huge impact on us, but also Bands like Kataklysm or Trivium. At the same time, we draw inspiration from a broader spectrum, including black metal elements and modern acts that bring new emotional and atmospheric layers into the genre. Beyond music, philosophy and the search for meaning in an imperfect world play a big role in shaping our lyrical direction.
Asmoth: Your new album Chasing Utopia came out in March 2026—what was the main concept or vision behind this record? From Ashes Reborn: Chasing Utopia revolves around the idea of a world that has lost itself—where truth becomes a tool and meaning turns into something that can be sold. It explores the human desire for perfection and how that pursuit can lead to illusion, control, and ultimately collapse. At its core, the album is a reflection—a mirror that confronts the listener with uncomfortable truths while still holding on to the idea of resistance and inner strength.
Asmoth: How does Chasing Utopia differ from Existence Exiled in terms of songwriting, production, and overall atmosphere?
From Ashes Reborn: The new album is a clear evolution in every aspect. The songwriting is more refined and dynamic, with a stronger focus on emotional contrast and storytelling. Production-wise, everything is more detailed and powerful, giving each element more space to breathe. Atmospherically, Chasing Utopia goes deeper—it’s darker, more layered, and more immersive, while still maintaining the balance between aggression and melody that defines our sound.
Asmoth: Can you walk us through your songwriting and recording process for this second album?
From Ashes Reborn: Our process usually starts with strong core ideas—riffs, melodies, or thematic concepts—that set the direction of a track. From there, we build the songs collaboratively, focusing on dynamics and emotional flow rather than just technicality. Recording-wise, we aim for precision but also for authenticity, making sure the energy of the music remains intact. Since we operate primarily as a studio project, we can fully concentrate on refining every detail until it matches our vision.
Asmoth: The melodic death metal scene is quite diverse nowadays—how do you see your place within it, especially as a German band?
From Ashes Reborn: The scene is more diverse than ever, which is both a challenge and an opportunity. We see ourselves as a bridge between the classic Swedish roots of melodic death metal and a modern, high-fidelity sound. Being a German band, we bring our own perspective into the genre, but we don’t see borders as limitations. Our goal is to contribute something authentic—music that respects the legacy of the genre while pushing it forward.
Asmoth: What are your plans for the future—live shows, tours, or perhaps already new material in the works?
From Ashes Reborn: Right now, the focus is fully on Chasing Utopia—sharing it with the world and reaching as many listeners as possible. So far, From Ashes Reborn has been a studio-driven project, which allowed us to put all our energy into songwriting and production. That said, the future remains open—whether it’s live performances or new material, the drive to evolve and create never stops.
