FULL-LENGTH REVIEW : Κυδοιμοσ (Kydoimos) by Kawir

Following their critically acclaimed 2019 album Αδράστεια (adraisteia), Greek pagan/black metal legends Kawir released their newest monument, Κυδοιμοσ, in April 2024 via the Dutch label Soulseller Records. This new opus plunges listeners into the heart of a mythical battle.

Κυδοιμοσ, pronounced "kydoimos," refers to a violent clash between two armies in ancient Greece. This ninth chapter in the band's discography marks a 52-minute exploration of war, glory, and pain. From the first notes, we are plunged into the heart of a battle with sharp riffs, frenetic drums, and cavernous vocals that immerse listeners in a dark and epic atmosphere. While the album explores epic and atmospheric soundscapes, we encounter folkloric elements at certain moments, as exemplified by the track Εκατογχειρες (Hecatonchires), which is accompanied by the vocals of Jim Mutilator (ex-Rotting Christ and Varathron).

Sung entirely in Greek, the album's lyrics come alive through Porphyrion's powerful vocals. Kawir's songs strike a perfect balance between raw energy and sonic precision. This impeccable production ensures every instrument creates an impressive listening experience.

Kydoimos is a rewarding album that deserves further exploration. Kawir's ambitious vision translates into a successful musical epic, solidifying their place as a major force of the Greek metal scene.
