INTERVIEW - Open Surgery : “This album has taken a lot more time...” Talking about their upcoming album

The Swedish death metal band Open Surgery is set to release their new album, Absolute Destruction, on July 19 via BVR Records. In an interview, the band members shared insights about the album and Death Metal.

Serial Metalbums : Your new album Absolute Destruction is releasing soon. Could you tell us about the central theme of the album and what inspired it ?

Open Surgery : The central theme in this album is the same theme as on our previous albums. We write songs based on real life events and the horrors of humankind. We see no reason to make shit up. Humans keep on committing terrible deeds all over the world, all the time.

Serial Metalbums : How has your musical approach evolved since your last album Post Mortem Mutilation ? Are there any new elements or experiments that fans can look forward to on this new release ?

Open Surgery : This album has taken a lot more time. Normally we are a quite productive band, but these songs have been with us for a long time but due to several reasons we never got to the point of recording them. The pandemic being one of those reasons.

One major difference with this album compared to Post Mortem Mutilation is that we did everything ourselves this time. From start to finish. We also recorded the drums differently to get a bit more of a "live" touch.

Serial Metalbums : Can you describe the creative process for this album compared to your previous works ? Were there any particular challenges or standout moments during the recording ?

Open Surgery : Not much has changed in the creative process over the years. Three out of four band members contribute heavily to the song writing. We always strive towards having a sound that isn't too polished. We don't want to be another band with the exact same sound. The most standout moments in the recording came with the mixing phase when we experimented a lot with different guitar sounds in order to get the right feeling without sounding too modern.

Serial Metalbums : What are your expectations for this album after its release ? Are there any planned tours to promote it, and if so, are there any specific destinations you're looking forward to visiting ?

Open Surgery : We hope to get more good reviews like the one you guys provided. Thank you for that ! We have currently no planned tour but we hope to get back on the live scene this fall. There are many places we would like to visit but our main goal is to become more active on the live scene and continue working on new material. This process has already started.

Serial Metalbums : As a Death Metal band, what is your approach to capturing the raw energy of your performances in the studio and on stage ? Is there a noticeable difference between the two ?

Open Surgery : Death Metal is always raw on stage but the hard thing is to maintain the sound and intensity on the albums. We are a very riff based band and we hope to stand out on the live scene with our non-polished and old-school sound. We play the type of death metal that we ourselves enjoy to watch live. For us there is no noticeable difference between the two, but we really would like to be labeled the "no bullshit" Death Metal band. If you enjoy proper Death Metal you can probably find tracks and riffs that you enjoy in our repertoar.
