Pre-release Review : Absolute Destruction by Open Surgery

This year, I discovered the Swedish Death Metal band Open Surgery. Formed in 2012, the band has released two albums Experiments of Excessive Torture in 2014 and Post Mortem Mutilation in 2016. They also released an EP titled After Birth Abortion in 2018. On 19 July, Open Surgery will be unleashing their new release Absolute Destruction via BVR Records.

Through 9 tracks, the Swedish band revisits the Old School Death Metal, taking fans back to the genre's roots. From the very first notes, the atmosphere is oppressive, the rhythmic and precise performance offers no respit for the listeners. The band's musicale influences are immediately apparent. Throughout my listening to Absolute Destruction I was reminded of bands such as Grave and Cannibal Corpse

With their structured and deceptive simplicity, the guitars riffs evoke for the listeners the Old School Death Metal. The drums are relentless, offering no compromise to the rhythm.  The crafted solos and masterfully tempo changes deliver to the songs an intense sonic variety. The tracks Psychotic Flame Thrower Maniac, Sub Zero Suffocation and Corpus os Impurum are the perfect exemple of this intensity. The vocals are guttural and aggressive, alternating between growls and inhuman screams of violence and suffering. As for the vocals, the performance is particularly unleashed as a beast on the the tracks Ceremonial Collector of Skulls and Psychotic Flame Thrower Maniac.

Open Surgery plunges us into the Old School Death Metal soundscape with an intense rhythm accompanied by phenomenal vocals and impeccable production. For sur, Absolute Destruction is an album for all Death Metal worshippers.
