Kaosophia is a black metal band from Ukraine, formed in 2011. The band released their debut album, The Origins of Extinction, in 2013, followed by a second album, Serpenti Vortex, in 2017. At the end of 2025, they returned with a third album entitled Beyond the Black Horizon, released via the label Serpent Sun Records. This album is available in digital format, on 12” vinyl and on CD. This is my very first immersion into the band’s soundscape.
From the very first notes, Kaosophia establishes a heavy and oppressive atmosphere, driven by a dark aesthetic and a fast, direct rhythm. At some passages, the instruments ease this frenzy while maintaining a sinister aura, as on Ніктелій from 3:00 onwards. Some tracks, like Катарсис віри and Відлуння небуття, stand out for their length, allowing the musicians to further develop their sonic identity. To reinforce this intensity and diabolical dimension, the band also offers instrumental tracks, such as Літанія руїни, which unfolds a ritualistic soundscape. The album also features more melodic moments, particularly on tracks like Funeral of the Gods and Журба.
The vocals are high-pitched and sinister, perfectly in keeping with the overall atmosphere. They are particularly striking on tracks like Катабазис, where they flow almost continuously, underpinned by frenetic guitars and blast beats. The same is true of Funeral of the Gods, where the vocalist delivers a striking scream before evolving into a more infernal performance. The vocals also take on a more narrative dimension on Відлуння небуття, especially from 5:00 onwards.
Among the key moments, I particularly remember the haunting solo starting at 3:24 on Ніктелій. On Катарсис віри, I especially appreciated the melancholic, heavy, and technical aspect, as well as the transition at 4:05. On Funeral of the Gods, from 1:28 onwards, the composition becomes more demonstrative, with melodies that establish themselves as the central focus, before an instrumental onslaught from 2:48 onwards (a track that I particularly liked for its balance between rawness and melody). Відлуння небуття truly took me by storm with its ritualistic aesthetic and well-placed blasts, and I really enjoyed the songwrtting from 6:41 onwards, where the composition reaches in intensity.
Beyond The Black Horizon is an album that doesn't reinvent anything new in the genre, but its appreciation is undeniable for me. It's a well-balanced work of intensity, melody, and sinister atmosphere. Ultimately, it's an album I would recommend to my friends who enjoy extreme metal.
