Album Review: "Tenebrario" by Hierophany

Today I’m going to write about Tenebrario, the debut album by the band Hierophany. It’s an album that was recommended to me a few weeks ago, and now I’m going to share my thoughts on it. Hierophany is a black metal project that was reborn in Mexico in 2025. (Yes reborn,  because the band had already existed under the name Black Hate between 2006 and 2025). So Tenebrario is the band’s first album under its new name, and it was released in December 2025m via the label Serpent Sun Records in digital format, CD digipak and limited-editimon vinyl.

So, Tenebrario is a 42:29-minute album featuring six tracks. The songs are long. And from the very first notes, a dark and sinister atmosphere takes hold; this gloomy atmosphere is very oppressive throughout the album. The music is heavy and bleak. Tenebrario is almost a ceremonial album; passages like those on Beyond The Sacred, from 4:25 onward, and at the beginning of Vigilae Mortuorum perfectly illustrate this ceremonial atmosphere. The album also contains more disturbing moments, such as at the track Oficio de Tinieblas, with its dark ambiant atmosphere and moans, plunging us directly into a hellish environment.

The guitars maintain a measured tempo to create an oppressive and atmospheric mood, with carefully accelerations in certain passages. Melodies are also present, such as on Ars Moriendi from 6:26 onward, or in the solo of Communio Mortis from 2:09 onward. But they remain discreet and avoid becoming overly demonstrativeFor me, the best guitar performance is on the track TenebrarioThe drums alternate between technical passages and dominant blast beats. I think the drums are one of the elements that contributes most to this sonic intensity. Furthermore, The drumming reaches its peak on Communio Mortis and during the section starting from 1:59 onward in Vigilae Mortuorum

The vocals are quite nuanced and not limited to growls or higher-pitched sounds, but also include whispers that add intensity to the oppressive atmosphere. The vocals also takes on a more tormented form in certain passages, such as on Communio Mortis from 0:48 onwards. In my opinion, the best vocal performances are on tracks like Beyond The Sacred and Vigilae Mortuorum.

Among the moments I enjoyed was the atmosphere on Ars Moriendi from 4:58 onwards. On Beyond The Sacred, I liked the pace and composition during the sections starting at 2:29 and 3:59. The vocal performance on Communio Mortis, with its high-pitched screams from 4:02 onwards, is simply intense and comes just after a few moments of whispering. In my opinion, the track Tenebrario represents the creative peak of this album: sinister atmospheres, melodies, and nuanced composition.

Tenebrario, which was suggested to me and had been on my to-listen list for weeks, really surprised me. The Mexican band presents us with intense black metal, dark and atmospheric, with a terrifying occult structure. Listening to it, I immediately thought of the American band Akhlys. It's a truly excellent album.
