The Essential 2024 Albums: Mike Hess’s (Tales of Mike) List

As 2024 draws to a close, Mike Hess, the mastermind behind Tales of Mike, shared with me his top 5 album picks for the year through a message. In what follows, you’ll find his selected albums and the reasons behind his choices.

1. Aiwaz - Darrkh... It Is

I had already heard the Garden of Despair demo track and was really excited for the full album. And it turned out great – so much so that it even pushed Judas Priest into second place for me. I absolutely love melancholic doom metal, and right now, there are two exceptional bands in this genre: Voidhaven and Aiwaz. The album grows with every listen! My favorite track at the moment is The Ghost That Once Was I

2. Judas Priest - Invisible Shield

This album is in second place for me this year. Invisible Shield is, in my opinion, the best Judas Priest album since Painkiller. The guitar work is incredible, and Rob Halford is in top form. I saw them live, and they absolutely blew me away. My favorite track is Invisible Shield

3. Battle Tales - Greed of a King

I didn’t expect such a surprise, as I was completely unfamiliar with the band. But Battles Tales from Switzerland came out of nowhere for me with their album Greed of a King. The album is bursting with energy and joy, clearly influenced by early Falconer. My favorite track is the title track, Greed of a King, the flute is fantastic and gives the song a unique atmosphere. Folk metal doesn’t get much better than this!

4. Attic - Return of the Witchfinder

Attic has impressed me once again with their new album Return of the Witchfinder. I've been following the band since their demo tape, and I'm truly impressed with this new release. I think they've developed their own distinct, recognizable style. My favorite track is Synodus Horrenda because it encapsulates all of Attic's strengths in one anthem. The blast beats fit the band's sound perfectly and complement it beautifully.

5. Flotsam & Jetsam – I am the Weapon

I've known Flotsam & Jetsam since the 80s. I hadn't followed them for a while, but their latest album really grabbed me. The musicians are excellent, the production is strong and Eric's vocals are getting better and better! I play it regularly. My favorite track at the is Burned my Bridges.
