Must-Listen - "Lélekharang" by Witcher

The Hungarian black metal scene is full of fascinating bands and projects. When I was younger, my first discoveries included Sear Bliss and Forest Silence, particularly their album Philosophy of Winter, which quickly became an essential landmark in my black metal tastes. Today, I'm going to tell you about an album and a band that I discovered recently and became instantly hooked on.

The album in question, Lélekharang (which translates as Soul Bell in English - let's hope the translation is correct), was released in 2022 both independently and via Filosofem Records (by the way, I recommend you check out their other releases). Spanning 39 minutes and 30 seconds, Witcher delivers atmospheric black metal that's melodic, dark and intense.

The guitars and drums intertwine to create a fluid, direct musical composition that is both raw and melodic. Yet despite this continuity, the whole remains nuanced and avoids any monotony. The omnipresent keyboards create a dark, gloomy atmosphere, adding a touch of melancholy to the songwriting. The vocals, imbued with an aura of vengeance, seem to narrate an obscure fantasy. The album concludes with a cover of Moonlight Sonata Op. 27 No. 2, I. Adagio sostenuto, offering a surprisingly solemn final touch.

Before reviewing the tracks, a word about the artwork: a refined drawing depicting a witch burning at the stake, surrounded by villagers and religious figures. A particularly intriguing detail: in the background of the stake, a figure holding a candle seems to stand out from the rest of the scene.

Tracklist with few words:
1. Intro
2. Hamvak - My favourite track, a real masterpiece.
3. Lélekharang - An impeccable vocal performance and structure.
4. Csendesen - I loved the sequence and rhythm of the instruments.
5. Hazatérés - Striking melodies and a bass that resonates with power.
6. Moonlight Sonata Op. 27 No. 2, I. Adagio sostenuto - A great conclusion.
