---------------------
Sister Murder is a brutal death metal band from Indonesia, a country brimming with extreme bands, whether brutal death metal or grindcore. Founded in 2010, the quartet stands out for its exclusively female line-up: four determined and talented musicians. After several years of activity in the shadows, they released their very first EP, Ressurecting the Wounded Psyche, last March, initially as a self-production before a digipak CD version was released on 19 September via the Underground Syndicate label.
Ressurecting the Wounded Psyche EP features seven tracks with a total running time of just under eighteen minutes. Musically: brutal, in-your-face death metal played at a frenetic pace. The instruments interact with a violent cohesion typical of the Indonesian scene, and the frequent tempo changes keep the listener engaged throughout. The vocals struck me with their deep growls, sometimes muffled under the mass of instruments. In terms of production, I find it generally satisfying: everything remains audible, except on the last track, Abortion of Rotten Fetus, where the sound seemed rawer to me, almost different in the mix.... I think I'll listen to this track again to be sure.
Among the highlights, Beneath the Blood Moon opens the EP with a captivating melodic introduction before shifting into a frenetic acceleration on The Bloody Murder. On Soul Bomber Destruction, the drum beat in the first fifteen seconds immediately catches the ear. Aberration Mental Collapse slows down the tempo and features beastly vocals at 1:41; after a burst of drums at 2:52, the instruments fall silent for a moment, allowing the bass to take centre stage. This is undoubtedly the most elaborate track on the EP, offering several nuances in its structure.
Final Dying Repudiation stands out for its frenetic pace right from the introduction, with a first tempo change at 0:42, before returning to its initial momentum at 2:08. Human Body Dismemberment creates a cinematic atmosphere, inspired by horror films, an effect often appreciated in this style. The vocals, starting at 0:58, impress with their uninterrupted intensity. Finally, Abortion of Rotten Fetus concludes the EP with relentless brutality, where the drums hammer away relentlessly.
Ressurecting the Wounded Psyche offers a condensed version of Indonesian brutal death metal: fast, abrasive and peppered with rhythm changes that keep the listener's attention. The EP clearly illustrates the band's desire to make their mark on the local scene with an intense and brutal debut release.
