Album Review: "De Doden Rusten niet in Vrede" by Wurgilnõ

From the opening notes of De Doden Rusten Niet In Vrede (English for : The Dead Do Not Rest In Peace), the debut album by Wurgilnõ, released in June 2023, the listener is plunged into a dark and torment soundscape. The Dutch one-man band delivers an intense and unsettling listening experience that explores through legends and myths the darkest corners of the human psyche. The sounds are Black Metal, and Doom Metal influences are also present.

From the very first seconds, the listener is plunged into an oppressive rhythm. The musical structure of this release is elaborate and complex. with frequent changes in tempo, offering to the listeners a varied sounds. The melodies, sharply punctuated , are structured and intervene at key moments in the songs. Moments of respite when instrumental compositions guide the listener through a melancholic spiral. The muffled vocals sometimes are screamed and high pitched, sometimes clean and chanted, and we can find the perfect example of this in the tracks Tot eennzaamheid Verbannen and Kraaien op het Galgenveld.

Listening to this album, I really enjoyed two tracks in particular. The first is Wurlinō, where the complexity of the composition reaches its peak, and the second is De Doden rusten niet in vrede, the longest track on the album, a journey into the abyss as if it's the end of everything, a real funereal and desolate atmosphere.

Wurgilnõ's debut album released via Fetzner Death Records, is complex and hypnotic. It's not just a collection of songs. It's a true masterpiece that's sure to leave its mark on the minds of those who take the time to listen carefully.
