Album Review: "Void" by Vanessa Funke

The one-women project Vanessa Funke has just released its third album, Void, in digital format and on a cassette via the American label Liminal Dread Productionsan album consisting of 8 tracks with a total duration of one hour and two minutes, immerses us in a melancholic and atmospheric world.

Indeed, from the first track, The First World, which opens with a sweet melody accompanied by whispers. The tracks are lengthy, presenting a coherent structure and compositions that draw you in. Vanessa's captivating voice enhances the experience; simply put on your headphones and let yourself be swept away by the album's melancholy. Gothic elements are omnipresent, creating a dark yet enchanting ambiance. The vocals are nuanced, ranging from clean to sharp and piercing, as showcased in the track Loneliness. This song is an unmissable sonic journey, where black metal elements appear alongside atmospheres borrowed from doom metal, resulting in a successful aesthetic combination.

The tempo changes throughout the album contribute to its unique identity, making it a standout. Among the top titles The Funeral, where the gothic influences are distinctly clear. The track Infelicity offers a more blackened style, blending clean vocals with black metal screams; a feature I particularly adore.

Repent, the longest track on the album, progresses beautifully over its duration, presenting a sonic landscape that leaves no doubt about the creativity found in Void, In conclusion, this album showcases well-crafted instrumental and vocal performances, cementing its place as a remarkable work in the realm of melancholic and atmospheric music.
