Emissary are newcomers to the Spanish extreme metal scene. Formed in Barcelona in October 2023, the band play fast, ferocious thrash metal, with an old-school aesthetic and themes inspired by cosmic horror. Their debut album, Eldritch, will be released on 1 March via German label Fetzner Death Records, and it's fair to say that this first record promises to be a strong debut.
With its 8 tracks totalling 34 minutes and 2 seconds, Eldritch imposes a dominant thrash rhythm, marked by sharp guitars and relentlessly pounding drums. The complexity of the songwriting is evident in the elaborate structures, striking solos and raw, uncompromising songwriting. The typically old-school thrash vocals reinforce the structure, which I'd describe as wisely crafted, while the production remains faithful to the codes of the genre.

Some passages in particular demonstrate the richness of the songwriting, such as Door to the Mystical, whose rise in intensity from 1:09 onwards testifies to impressive endurance and mastery. The solos add an extra dimension, as on Eternity Bound, where the melodic aesthetic sublimates the ambient aggression. The guitar explosion on Ravening for Delight is another highlight of the album. The band's speed metal influences also shine through, notably on Hobb's End and Where the Silent Ones..., adding a touch of frenzy to the album.
Among my favourites tracks, The Shadows Lengthen in Carcosa stands out for its relentless rhythm and its headbanging solo. Immediately afterwards, At the Throne of Chaos stands out as one of the best tracks on the album: I've listened to it over and over again, its frantic pace such a testament to the band's technique and cohesion. Finally, The Witchfinder Rides Again is a real masterpiece. Its fast, technical construction, marked by a change of pace at 30 seconds, immediately grabs your attention. The drum performance at the end of the track is also captivating.
This album will undoubtedly be one of my favourites this year. Don't miss this release, you can order the album on the Fetzner Death Records - Website or on the bandcamp below.
