I've just had another listen to Abandoned, the next single from Tales of Mike, due for release on 23 May. The track is the second single to be taken from the doom/heavy metal project's forthcoming debut album Human. The first single, Human Masquerade, was released on 4 October 2024.
For 6 minutes and 27 seconds, Abandoned plunges us into a deep, immersive atmosphere. Get ready for a very different single from the previous one: while Human Masquerade tended towards a more doom/heavy thrashy style, this new track stands out for its intense emotional charge.
Right from the start, the mood is set, announcing a dark, oppressive atmosphere. The tempo then sets to a slow, melodic rhythm, while the vocals begin with a clear voice before the growls kick in, adding depth and intensity. The two vocal styles are skilfully interplayed, adding nuance and enriching the soundscape. At 3:40, the track takes an unexpected turn with a masterful guitar solo that spans several minutes. It breaks the monotony that is so characteristic of doom metal, adding a breath of new energy to the whole.
