COMMENT - “Indicible’’ (Compilation) by Indicible

Earlier this month, French death metal band Indicible unveiled a compilation of their first two EPs, released on cassette via the Underground Syndicate label. Before delving into the band's work, a bit of background: Indicible was formed in 2022 in Amiens. In 2023, the band released their first self-titled EP, Indicible, followed in 2024 by ODTS.

This compilation brings us a total of nine tracks with a total playing time of 35 minutes and 51 seconds. The cassette is divided into two parts: Side A contains the four ODTS tracks, while Side B features the five tracks from Indicible, remastered especially for the occasion.

From the very first notes, the sound is death metal with a modern edge. You could even call it the ‘new wave of death metal’ - I don't even know where I heard that term. The compositions are straight to the point, driven by sharp guitars and relentless drums, the whole sublimated by a raging growls.

Among the highlights is the drumming on L'Ordre du Temple Solaire, from 3:28 onwards, which is a pure burst of power. On The Blasted Heath, it's the vocal performance that stands out, particularly at 0:48, with a deep screaming that envelops the heavy atmosphere. This track also reveals a few breakdowns from the fourth minute onwards, flirting with the codes of deathcore. This first part concludes with Melted, a particularly intense track, illustrated by the instrumental and vocal outbursts, particularly at 0:58 and 1:30.

Side B gets off to a strong start with the track Indicible, which literally bursts forth from 1:07 onwards, blending guttural screams with frenetic instrumentation. Pure Horror also stands out with its strong thrash influences, nuanced vocals and undeniable raw power.

So, although this style of modern death metal tinged with deathcore isn't necessarily one of my usual favourites, I have to admit that this compilation is packed with moments of raw intensity that will delight some fans.
